2021 Original Mixed Media on 8" x 10" canvas
Painted in honor of Yayoi Kusama's 92nd birthday, this piece imagines the young Yayoi as she conversed with flowers and pumpkins, reflecting their influence and the polka dots that are hallmarks of Kusama's trendsetting op art. I departed from my typical impressionist style to a more graphic design in Kusama's honor using acrylics and finishing details in oils. The background begins with inspiration from the flag of her native Japan, shifting to a giant polka dot on eye-popping yellow as she used in installations. Yayoi's hair is rendered in vivid red as the adult artist chooses to become her art.
