HISTORIC PORTRAIT GALLERY at Susannah's Watch Bed & Breakfast,  Mechanicsville, MD

The first 6 historic portraits of colonial ancestry behind the Susannah's Watch property were unveiled for viewing in fall 2020. Painted after colonial portraitist works, some no longer extant, giclée reproductions of these commission pieces may be custom ordered through the Inn or from the artist directly. Portraits include the prominent Henry and Eleanor Darnall the first, grandchildren Henry and Eleanor the second, Governor Richard Bennett of Virginia, and Jane Bowles Wormeley.

The Susannah's Watch collection also includes several other impressionist works by L.A. Slayden which may be ordered as Limited Edition, hand-signed and -numbered prints on archival, 100% rag, hot press fine art paper.

PLEIN-AIR & STUDIO PAINTING

During fine days you may find me painting in the countryside surrounding World Golf Village and St. Augustine. Spectators are welcome to watch plein air work at a healthy distance.

Check my Instagram @leigh_slayden or Facebook/LASlayden to learn where I am, outdoors or in studio, and watch the work come together--you can even ask to purchase before someone else does!  Many paintings never make it into the web store because they are purchased by avid followers while they are still wet.

PLEIN AIR PAINTING

I love to paint "en plein air", that is, outdoors live on the scene. It's delightful for many reasons, including the connection I enjoy with onlookers. Below are a few of my recent plein air works.

Challenges for plein air include the day's changes in weather and of course in light--so shadows will change in the course of creation! Plus the simple challenge of working in a fixed position for 6 or more hours at a time...with my portable studio my only lifeline. I often work larger than many plein air painters do, so you can enjoy a larger artwork for your wall that does not require you to stand 12" away to enjoy the impressionist colors and brushwork.
